Many people who have hardwood floors in their home think that they have to clean those floors with a broom and mop exclusively. They think that a vacuum cleaner will damage or scratch the floors. This is only partly true. While there are vacuum cleaners out there that will damage hardwood floors, there are also units with specific settings for hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl flooring. Using these vacuums on the correct setting can help to get your floors very clean without the backbreaking labor of sweeping and mopping.

Most upright vacuums are actually great for hard surfaced flooring. It makes sense to use the upright as you normally would on carpet, on the floor, then using the hose attachment to get in the corners and sides of furniture or appliances. The catch is, you have to make sure that the upright you are using has a setting specifically for solid floors. This setting will actually raise the vacuum up, so that the sweeping motion of the brushes doesn’t hit the floor and cause scratching.

The higher setting will not affect how well the floors get cleaned because the dust and debris that you will be vacuuming up comes up much easier than the dust and debris in carpet. There are no carpet fibers to snag and hold the stuff back.

The last thing to think about is the wheels of the vacuum. Make sure to vacuum slowly, especially when making turns. Because the surface of the floor tends to be somewhat slick, the vacuum could slide instead of turn on its wheels, and this could cause scratching.

Vacuum cleaners are one of those things that don’t require a whole lot of maintenance. However, there are certain steps you can take to ensure that the vacuum cleaner you own and use lasts a long time. Below is a list of the most important vacuum cleaner maintenance steps you should take and how often you should do them.

1) Change the bag or canister. Of course, this one is simple but many people make the mistake of letting the bag, or canister on bagless vacuums get too full before they empty the contents. Even a bag or canister that is just 1/3 full can reduce the effectiveness of the vacuum. Make sure to change out or empty bags that get to this level of fullness.

2) Clean the brush roll. Make sure that the brush roll is clear of long hairs, carpet strings, or other things that can cause the roller to snag or can tangle around the roller causing it to jam. If it jams, it the stress put on to the motor can cause it to burn out.

3) Replace the belt. You should check the belt for wear and tear every year. Take a look at the manufacturer’s recommendations on how often to replace the belt. Make sure to replace the belt at the time specified. However, it is also a good idea to periodically check the belt for wear and tear to make sure that it doesn’t snap. This can also cause major damage to the motor.

4) Replace the filter. Often, a vacuum cleaner will continue to work fine even if the filter gets full. However, the filter will not be able to remove all of the dust and debris from the floor and air if it is clogged up. You could be spreading things around the house that you don’t want to breathe in. Again, refer to the owner’s manual for specific instructions on how often to replace or change the filter.

All of us like to save money. However, buying some things that are really cheap is not a good idea. Vacuum cleaners are one of these things. First of all, cheap vacuum cleaners just don’t last that long. There is a reason why the warranty offered on the cheap units is for such a shorter period of time than it is for the quality units. The manufacturer knows it’s going to break and doesn’t want to have to pay to replace it. Secondly, even brand new, most of these vacuums do not work well. They either do not provide enough suction to properly clean the floor, or they are so bulky and hard to maneuver that they are not worth the effort.

The biggest reason why buying a cheap vacuum cleaner is not a good idea is that it can actually be dangerous and effect your health, and the health of every family member who lives in the house. The problem is with the filter. Many cheap vacuums come with filters that are so low quality that they can’t properly trap the dust, dirt, mold, pollen or any other allergens. Instead of trapping them and allowing you to dispose of them, they suck them up and throw them right back into the air.

Vacuuming these things up and expelling them back into the air does more damage than if you were to not vacuum in the first place. It spreads all this stuff around and you and your family breathe them in. The potential health hazards of this are many.

The vacuum you buy does not have to have the expensive HEPA filter in it to work well. There are other types of filters that do just as good a job of trapping these things and allowing you to get rid of them. There are even vacuums that use water as a filter. Make sure that if you buy a cheap vacuum cleaners, it comes with a filter that will properly trap and remove all of these potentially harmful substances from the floor and air.

Mini vacuum cleaners can be extremely effective in cleaning certain things or areas and can be much more convenient than traditional vacuum cleaners. In order to compare them, we have listed a description of the most popular types of mini vacuums.

1) Car vacuum cleaner. There are vacuum designed to specifically clean your car. They come in different shapes and sizes and choosing one is just a matter of preference for the feel and design of the unit. These car vacuums can be cordless, run off of electricity, or can plug into the cigarette lighter of your car and run off of its battery. Some of the newer ones even have HEPA filters. Kirby, Eureka, and several of the other top vacuum cleaner brands make them.

2) Handheld. These small bagless or canister vacuums are best known by the brand name dustbuster. However, there are many companies manufacturing them, all with different features and price points. The biggest thing to look at here is suction power. You want to make sure that you buy one that provides ample suction to properly vacuum up whatever it is you are trying to clean. Look at the amount of amps the unit uses while you have it on. This will help determine its power.

3) Computer or USB vacuum cleaners. These amazing little vacuums actually plug into your computer and draw enough power from it to run. Amazingly, these tiny little vacuums are actually really effective in cleaning dust, paper particles and other things from your computer keyboard and monitor. They are even powerful enough to clean up the area around your work station.

Some people refer to vacuum cleaners that use water as a big part of their filtering systems as water vacuum cleaners. They are designed to remove all of the dust, pollen, allergens, mites and all kinds of other things from the air. The water acts as a trap and all of these things get caught in the water and can’t get out. From most expert accounts, a water vacuum can be very effective in removing these things from the air.

However, there are problems. First of all, you have to dump out the old water and replace it with new water pretty often. While most water vacuum cleaners are designed to make this process pretty simple, the bad part is that all of the stuff that got removed from the air and trapped inside of the water can get released back into the air pretty easily when you do this.

Most experts say that HEPA filters are just as effective in removing these things from the air and you don’t have this problem. Also, the water can make the vacuum very heavy and difficult to lift or get around. Some of these units can call for up to 1 and a half gallons of water. Each gallon of water weighs about eight pounds so you can see how much weight you are adding to a vacuum by putting the water in.

The one major benefit of these water vacuums that many people love is the ability to fill the water with an air freshener that has a scent of your choice. Throughout the process of vacuuming the house, the water mixes with the air freshener and puts good scents into the air, making the room smell clean and fresh. Some of the air fresheners are designed to get rid of the smell of smoke, pet odors, and other things.

There is only so much you can learn from industry experts. People who make livings out of reviewing certain key aspects of different products can be very valuable to a consumer trying to decide on a specific brand or model. However, their ratings are only half the story. It’s also very important to learn what people who own the model itself have to say about it. This is definitely true when it comes to vacuum cleaners. Consumer reports on vacuum cleaners can tell you how well a specific vacuum works, how long it lasts, how easy it is to maneuver, and a whole bunch more. Below is a list of things you should try to learn from consumer reports on vacuum cleaners.

1) Maneuverability. All vacuum manufacturers will claim that their model is easy to get around. However, this is obviously not the case. The best way to know if a vacuum is easy to get up stairs, in hard to reach places, or into the closet is to hear from the people who own it and use it all the time.

2) Filter. Does the filter do a good job removing dust and allergens from the air? This is a hot button topic to most people who own vacuums and any good consumer report will mention this aspect of the unit.

3) Durability. Look for reports from consumers who have owned the vacuum cleaner for an extended period of time. Does it still work well? Are there things about it that don’t work or look as good as they used to?

4) Suction power. You can only make an educated guess as to the power of a vacuum cleaner. The amount of amps it draws is a good indication of how powerful it will be, but it is not the whole story. The way the motor is designed, the filtering system, and the height settings will all affect power. See what consumers are saying.

Choosing which type of vacuum cleaner to purchase for every day household cleaning depends on two main factors – what type of floors you have, and which type you prefer for convenience and comfort. Upright vacuums are great for certain reasons and not great for others. The same is true for bagless canister vacuums. Most people are familiar with uprights but may not be with the new features associated with bagless canister vacuums. Below are a list of their positive attributes.

1) Great for hardwood floors, tile floors and laminate flooring. They are ideal for cleaning these types of floor surfaces because of their maneuverability and height settings. They are also ideal for vacuuming up and down the stairs for the same reason. They are much easier to get up and down than an upright vacuum is. While they are not as ideal for carpet or large areas, recent technological advances have improved their ability to clean these types of areas.

2) Bagless canister vacuums are very convenient to clean because there is no bag to change out. It is very easy to release the canister and dump out the contents. Unlike an upright, you don’t have to spend several minutes taking out the old bag and fiddling with installing the new one. This process is made much simpler and quicker.

3) Lastly, they are great for reaching hard to reach places. All of the nooks and crannies of a room can be vacuumed more conveniently with canister vacuums. The attachments that they come with make reaching pretty much any spot on the floor possible. Vacuuming certain spots with an upright vacuum cleaner is almost impossible.

Buying new appliances or tools for home cleaning and repair can be a little confusing. This is definitely true when you are looking to buy a new vacuum cleaner. In order to get one that will work well, last long, and fit within your budget, it is a good idea to compare vacuum cleaners before you settle on one. They all have different features and pros and cons to them, so finding one that meets your requirements takes a little bit of research. Below is a list of things you should consider when you compare vacuum cleaners.

1) How powerful is the motor? There are several factors that determine the strength or power of a vacuum cleaner motor. Number one, is the amount of amps it draws when in use. The higher the number, the better. Secondly, you should look at the filtering system. Some filtering systems that remove allergens and other undesirable elements from the air can actually decrease the power of the vacuum. Third, how low is the setting to the ground. The lower the vacuum is set, the more powerful the suction will be.

2) Filtering system. Many vacuums today utilize a HEPA filter which is effective at removing things from the air that cause allergies, sickness and smells. However, there are other filtering systems that can remove other things and can increase the power of the vacuum.

3) Type of vacuum. Obviously, an upright unit has advantages over a canister unit, and also disadvantages. The same is true with a cordless vacuum cleaner or hand held unit. Depending on what you will be needing to clean, and how often you will be using it, your choice of style should suit the usage the machine will be getting.

There are several factors that they consider when coming up with these ratings and the more you understand what they look for, the better purchase decision you can make. Below are the top four factors that go into a vacuum cleaner rating.

1) Power. There are several key things they look at here. First is the number of amps the vacuum cleaner draws when in use. In other words, how much electricity does it require to run? Commercial units use the most, therefore are the most powerful. However, the amps drawn are not the only thing that determines power. The way the motor is designed and the filtration system will greatly influence the amount of power a certain vacuum cleaner will have.

2) Durability. Everyone should take certain steps to properly maintain their vacuums in order to get the most service out of them. Durability of a vacuum cleaner is important to the experts doing the ratings. If a machine is not going to last a long time, with or without proper maintenance, it’s not going to receive good reviews. To get the highest ratings, a machine must be expected to last at least twenty years.

3) Price. Upright units are rated in price range against other upright units. The same is true for bagless units. Vacuum cleaners ratings are type specific. In other words, apples should be compared to apples. This is also true for price. The units are only rated against other vacuums in similar price ranges. There are three basic price ranges. Economy, moderate, and high end. Determine the price range you want to review and look for the highest rated units.

4) Filtration system. Now days, it’s not enough for a vacuum cleaner to work well in order for it to be rated high. It also has to do a good job of filtering undesirable elements from the air and floor. Whether or not a specific vacuum cleaner is efficient at doing this can determine how well it rates.
